Summary of the Profile of study programme
General Description: Objective(s) of a study programme: to educate a pharmacy specialist, who is able to provide pharmaceutical service in a pharmacy, to perform practical pharmaceutical activities in various fields of health care, to apply the latest technologies under working conditions in a pharmacy, wholesale distribution companies and pharmaceutical industry or other enterprises involved in pharmaceutical activities, to communicate and cooperate in a multi-profile team, to seek continuous personal and professional development in response to the changing environment. Learning outcomes:
Graduates will be able to: 1. Knowledge and ability to apply it in the planning and performing search for professional information necessary for pharmaceutical activity in various fields of health promotion. 2. Knowledge of medicines and properties of medicinal substances, used in the manufacture of them, technologies of medicines production, ability to apply the acquired knowledge in practice and perform physical, chemical, biological and microbiological testing of medicinal products. 3. Knowledge of the effect of medicinal preparations on the body and ability to explain the safe use of medicinal products and pharmacy goods. 4. Ability to perform pharmaceutical activity-oriented applied research, analyze the results and apply them in solving issues of pharmacy practice. 5. Ability, under the supervision of a pharmacist, to manufacture, package and label extemporaneous medicinal preparations, ensuring their quality. 6. Ability, under the supervision of a pharmacist, to determine the proper filling in of a prescription, and make decisions on the options of sale (dispensing) of the medicinal preparations, to select non-prescription medicines, to provide pharmaceutical information about medicinal products, to choose pharmacy goods according to the needs of residents. 7. Ability to apply legal and professional ethic requirements, associated with pharmaceutical activities, and to implement decisions for achievement of marketing and communication goals. 8. Ability to collaborate with health care professionals and other persons, to work individually and in a team, to take responsibility for the quality of own performance and for that of the subordinate personnel, following the civil and ethical principles of the profession. 9. Ability to clearly and convincingly convey the knowledge of professional practice and science to learners. 10. Ability to make decisions and to perceive moral responsibility for own activity and the impact of its outcomes on the welfare of society, its economic and cultural development, and on the environment, to critically assess own professional practice, to reflect on own professional development, being aware of the importance of lifelong learning. Activities of teaching and learning:
During studies various teaching and learning methods are applied: lectures, seminars, practical work, laboratory work, practice in real work placements, situation analysis, group learning, project, preparation and presentation of autonomously written assignments, discussions, workshops. Students are offered the following forms of self-study: independent study of theoretical topics, preparation for colloquiums, written tests, course papers and projects, term paper, laboratory works, writing surveys and reports, professional practice performance reports, preparation for seminars and presentations, description, solving and presentation of clinical situations in real work places. Methods of assessing learning outcomes: A cumulative assessment system is used for evaluation of learning outcomes. General assessment of the study course learning outcomes is determined with regard to the evaluation strategy, set in the programme of a particular subject. The learning outcomes are assessed using a system of scoring. A 10 score assessment system is applied in evaluation of students’ achievements. Different assessment methods are used for evaluation of the learning outcomes achieved and the competence acquired: oral interrogation, project presentation, completion of practice diaries, written examination, testing, case study, oral and written reflection, analysis of literature references and other sources of information. Subjects of general collegial studies –15 credits: Professional Ethics, Methods of Chemical Substance and Dispersion Systems Analysis, Introduction to Pharmacy Studies, Information technologies. Subjects of the study field comprise 135 credits: Medical Terminology; Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology; Basics of Diseases and Emergency Medical Aid; Pharmacology; Pharmacology and pharmacotherapy; Microbiology; Social Pharmacy; Social pharmacy and pharmaceutical care; Pharmacognosy; Pharmaceutical Chemistry; Methodology of Applied Research; Medicinal Drug Technology: General, Extemporaneous and Work Safety; Industrial Medicinal Drug Technology; Basics of Toxicology Communication Psychology; Foreign Language; Pharmacy Goods, Phytotherapy, Clinical Pharmacy. Practices of professional activities, performed during studies, comprise 30 credits: Professional Internship of Pharmacy Consultant; Professional Internship of Medicines Production, Labelling and Pharmacological Classification; Final Professional Internship of Pharmacy Work Organization and Analysis of Clinical Situations. Practices are conducted in Lithuanian community pharmacies, community pharmacies manufacturing medicines, in hospital pharmacies, university pharmacy, in the Botany Garden of Vytautas Magnus University. Students are provided with opportunities to perform practices in different countries of EU, participating in Erasmus + exchange programme. Student prepares the bachelor's thesis in the third year with the help of the supervisor. Student's completed and formalized work, demonstrates the achievement of the program objective achieved in the study process and the expected learning outcomes, professional and general competencies. Student has to pass the final exam during the spring semester of the third year, during which he / she proves the abilities acquired during the studies: to apply knowledge, to carry out research. Student shows social, special and personal skills: knowing the effects of medicines on the body: safe use of medicines and pharmaceuticals; under the supervision of a pharmacist, to determine whether the prescription has been properly prescribed and to decide on the options for the sale / issue of the medicinal product; to select non-prescription and traditional herbal medicinal products and to provide pharmaceutical information about them, to select pharmacy goods according to the needs of the population. Professional Bachelor Thesis– 6 credits; Qualifying examination – 3 credits. Specialisations: - Optional courses:
Elective subjects – Courses of Deeper Studies of the Same Study Field / Courses of the Studies of Another Field - 30 credits: Quality Systems in Pharmacy; Economics of Health; Commerce and marketing; Pharmaceutical Care; Pharmaceutical Marketing; Analysis of health data; Bio-pharmaceutics and Pharmacogenetics; Basics of Biotechnology; Homeopathy/ Consulting and Team Work in a Pharmacy; Health Promotion and Prevention of Diseases/Botany, Pharmaceutical calculation/Mentoring. Distinctive features of a study programme: The study programme is represented by applied nature, focused on practical performance and development of research skills. The program is designed observing the principle of sustainability between theory and practice, research and studies. The programme graduates acquire practical skills in line with the demand of the labour market, and are ready to develop lifelong learning competence. Students have opportunities to study or perform professional practices in different countries of European Union under the Erasmus+ exchange programme. Access to professional activity or further study: Access to professional activity: A pharmacist’s assistant can work and provide pharmaceutical service, under supervision of a pharmacist, in a community pharmacy, community pharmacy manufacturing medicines, hospital pharmacy, hospital pharmacy manufacturing medicines, university pharmacy or charity pharmacy and wholesale distribution companies and in pharmaceutical industry or other enterprises involved in pharmaceutical activities or other pharmaceutical companies (institutions). Access to further study: The programme graduates can study at Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Vytautas Magnus University and other universities considering the universities procedure of admission.
