Summary of the Profile of study programme
General Description: Objective(s) of a study programme: To train a manufacturing engineer, who is able to design/model industrial products using software, has acquired knowledge about material technologies and management of manufacturing processes as well as gained practical skills; and is ready to solve manufacturing engineering problems as well as select the tools and equipment for the implementation of engineering solutions. Learning outcomes: 1. Being able to apply general laws as well as the laws and regularities of natural and engineering sciences and mathematics, which are necessary for mastering the fundamental foundations of the field of manufacturing engineering. 2. Being able to accumulate and apply the basic knowledge of engineering, material sciences, manufacturing engineering as well as social, economic and management sciences that are
relevant to practical work in manufacturing. 3. Acquisition of the basic knowledge of philosophy, communication, digital technology, product design, engineering graphics, materials science, engineering mechanics, entrepreneurship and personality development, and cognition of the socio-economic environment. 4. Ability to conduct the experiments necessary to perform engineering tasks using typical laboratory equipment, process the data obtained and draw conclusions. 5. Being able to link personal knowledge and understanding while analysing engineering tasks, and select appropriate methods, experimental as well as manufacturing equipment to perform them. 6. Being able to determine the main means/methods of project management and implementation in the field of professional manufacturing engineering while designing, manufacturing and marketing products. 7. Ability to organize the work of a division following the principles of engineering performance, taking into account the basic requirements of work and fire safety. 8. Being able to perform engineering tasks independently and in a team, in collaboration with industrial organizations and society. 9. Ability to evaluate the impact of specific manufacturing engineering solutions on the society and the environment; follow the norms of professional ethics and engineering activities, and comprehend the responsibility for the results of personal activities. 10. Being able to independently plan the personal professional development in the context of lifelong learning.
Activities of teaching and learning: Lectures, seminars, discussions, practical assignments, problem-based learning, brainstorming, demonstration, case study, searching and analysing information, watching and analysing videos, projects demonstration, individual work, group work, lectures given by guest speakers (practitioners), cognitive tours, presentations of reviews, individual and team projects, oral presentations, real manufacturing processes simulated by software, etc. Methods of assessment of learning achievements:
Two evaluation principles are used to assess the learning outcomes, i.e. cumulative when the assessment takes place periodically after students have completed intermediate tasks, and collegial, which is used for the evaluation of the graduation theses (performed by a competent board of scientists and professional practitioners). For the cumulative assessment, the academic staff use methods such as integrated individual/group projects and/or term papers, oral and written interrogation, tests, reports of individual and group projects, reports on and presentations of the analysis of video materials, presentation of individual assignments, professional bachelor thesis, etc. Framework: Study subjects (modules), practical training: The courses of the general subjects of college studies - 15 credits: Contemporary Lithuanian and Correspondence, Foreign Language 1,2, Philosophy, Business Communication. The courses of the study field comprise 115 credits: Digital Technologies, Engineering Graphics, Mathematics, Sketching and Drawing Graphics, Statistics and Data Processing, Physics, Mechanics, Structural Materials, Composition, Theory and Practice of Measurement, Graphic Design, Material Research, Product Design, 3D Design, Wood Processing Technology, Innovation & New Product Development, Metal Processing Technology, Industrial Design Materials and their Processing Technology, Product Design, Finishing & Packaging Technology, Quality Management & Standards, Applied Research, Basics of Law, Human Safety, Business Economics & Management. Internships are assigned 30 credits: Introductory, Creative-Manufacturing, Manufacturing-Technological and Final. 11 credits are allocated for the preparation and defence of the Professional Bachelor Thesis of the study field. In total, 156 credits are allocated for the courses of the study field. Specialisations: No Optional courses: Freely elective courses are assigned 9 credits. Students may choose from the courses on Social Responsibility and Environment Protection, Career Development, Ethnic Culture, or courses from the list offered by KK. Distinctive features of the study programme:
The content of the study programme will provide opportunities to acquire complex knowledge and skills in the areas such as spatial design, manufacturing technologies, management, engineering solutions, and assess the social and environmental impact of an industrial design product. The study programme of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) is purposefully focused on training professional manufacturing engineers who comprehend the key processes in manufacturing companies and have mastered and apply the latest technological developments in the design stage of a new product. Access to professional activity or further study: Access to professional activity: Graduates of this study programme will work in the divisions of designing and developing new products and their manufacture in industrial enterprises as the specialists of designing and manufacturing metal, glass, plastic products, furniture and interior elements; and technical consultants in sales companies. In Lithuania, the engineers designing industrial products and production technologists are in great demand, especially in the companies that manufacture metal and plastic products, furniture and wood products. Access to further study: Upon completion of the study programme of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE), studies may be continued at master degree level in Lithuanian universities. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) implements master degree study programmes “Production Engineering” and “Technology and Management”. Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) implements the master degree programme “Management of Industrial Engineering and Innovation”. Vilnius Academy of Arts (VDA) implements the master degree programme “Design”. The completion of the study programme of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) provides a possibility to continue studies in foreign higher education institutions (Delft University of Technology in Holland, Porto Polytechnic Institute in Portugal, Poznań University of Technology in Poland, Žilina University in Slovakia, etc.)
