Summary of the Profile of study programme

General Description: Objective(s) of a study programme: The aim of Pre-school and Pre-primary Education study programme is to prepare a teacher who is able to engage the family into education process, taking into account the child's inherent abilities and individual experience, to develop his/her independence, creativity, environmental awareness and knowledge of the country, the ability to learn.
Learning outcomes: Study programme graduates:
Graduates will:
1. understand historical, philosophical, psychological, intercultural aspects of science education and education policy, theories of sustainable development, management and leadership;
2. apply knowledge of education and training, information technologies in carrying out the research and interpreting results;
3. be aware of person’s development and maturity theories understanding the diversity of children;
4. analyze scientific and informational educational references, apply contemporary methods in collecting information, analyzing and systematizing;
5. assess individual children’s needs, interests, abilities, development, differentiate and individualize the educational process; to develop children's independence;
6. communicate and cooperate with learners' parents (guardians), colleagues, representatives from social or educational services in achieving common goals;
7. respect every child, to be open, flexible in interaction with a child and his/her family;
8. know the planning of the educational process and management strategies, methods and techniques, ways for assessment and self-assessment;
9. understand the learning context of children with special needs (inclusive education) and gifted children; be aware of pre-school and pre-primary education methodology;
10. identify educational problem, formulate research goal and tasks, to collect, process, analyze research results, formulate findings and recommendations;
11. assess individual children's needs, interests, abilities, to adjust educational / learning content, create a safe, stimulating environment for learning and dialogue-based group operating situations;
12. plan and organize educational / learning process, to anticipate and manage the resources required, use a variety of learning tools, methods, digital technologies, develop an information culture;
13. communicate and cooperate with parents (guardians), provide a constructive feedback which encourages each learner’s progress;
14. develop an understanding of national identity and tolerance for otherness;
15. communicate in correct professional Lithuanian and foreign languages, carry out teacher’s activity research for the improvement of professional activity;
16. present ideas, reason decisions, act and learn collaboratively in teams, coordinate project activities, cherish Lithuanian culture and nature, participate in the processes of educational change;
17. reflect on one’s pedagogical activity, identify vacancy in knowledge and skills, define personal development direction, take responsibility for one’s work results.
Activities of teaching and learning: Lectures, presentations, discussions, seminars, demonstrations, practical assignments, group work, literature study, project preparation, etc.
Methods of assessment of learning achievements: Teaching and learning outcomes are highlighted using accumulative assessment system. Knowledge and skills are assessed by ten grades scale. The final score may consist of several components, collected in the study process (interim reports, self-study papers, examination or project). Course unit teacher determines cumulative assessment of the subject components and their values of the coefficients depending on the complexity of the subject. Study subject teacher determines and informs the students at the beginning of the term about the impact (percent) of each component (task, work) for the final assessment and formulates assessment criteria for each intermediate assignment.
Framework: Study subjects (modules), practical training:
Volume of general subjects of collegial studies is 15 credits: Philosophy of Education, Professional Foreign Language 1,2,3, Professional Language Culture and Rhetoric.
Volume of subjects of pedagogical studies of the main field is 60 credits: Educational Psychology, Development and Special Child Psychology, Basics of Educational Sciences, Basics of Educational Research,
Special Pedagogy and Inclusive Education. Volume of professional internship is 30 credits (Observation Internship, Pedagogical Internship 1, Pedagogical Internship 2, Pedagogical Internship 3, Independent Pedagogical Internship). Final Thesis of Pedagogical Studies is 3 credits.
Volume of the module of pedagogical specialization subjects is 90 credits: Management of Pre-school Educational Institution, Pre-school and Pre-primary Education, Mathematical Cognition and Games, Environmental Awareness and Socialization, Development of Linguistic Communication in Children, Children’s Literature and Folklore, Drama Education 1,2, Children‘s Arts and Technologies 1,2, Music Education 1,2, Education of Physical Activity, Child‘s Health, Education Management, Social and Family Pedagogy, Basics of Law, Human Safety, Information and Communication Technologies. Professional Bachelor Thesis - 9 credits. Studies are completed by defending bachelor’s Final Theses (project) in the meeting of the qualification commission.
Optional courses: Pre-school and Pre-primary Education study programme offers the following subjects selected by the student: Management of Educational Projects/Event Management, Experiments and Innovations in Education/STEAM in Pre-school and Pre-primary Education, Language Studies 1/ Career Planning and Portfolio Formation, Language Studies 2/ Ethnic Culture and Multiculturalism, Professional Etiquette/ Basics of Etiquette.
Distinctive features of a study programme: The essence of the study programme - to ensure the coherence of theory and practice. Already the first-year students have the possibility to test themselves in practice during the observation internship. Lectures of pedagogical theory are held at the best pre-school education institutions that apply different educational methods.
Access to professional activity or further study: Access to professional activity: having acquired the qualification of a pre-school education teacher, a graduate is competent to perform educational work as a pre-school and/or pre-primary group teacher at state and / or non-state pre-school educational institutions and to establish non-formal education institutions and / or pre- primary education groups.
Access to further study: Access to the second cycle studies upon meeting requirements set by the accepting higher education institution.
